Learn the distinctions that matter before comparing Medicare coverage approaches.

General education · Current policy and eligibility rules should be verified with the official program or issuer.

Start with the structure

Original Medicare is the federal program's Part A and Part B coverage. Medicare Advantage is a private-plan alternative for receiving Medicare benefits. Medigap can help pay certain costs under Original Medicare, subject to eligibility and enrollment rights.

What to compare

The monthly premium is only one part of the decision. Depending on the type of plan, provider access, referral rules, pharmacy coverage, cost sharing and annual out-of-pocket exposure also matter.

  • Your doctors and participating hospitals
  • Prescription drug list and preferred pharmacies
  • Eligibility and enrollment periods
  • Premiums, deductibles and other cost exposure

Use the official rules

Medicare enrollment timing and plan rights differ by product and individual circumstances. Confirm current rules with Medicare or an authorized source before changing coverage.
