The difference between a plan record, quote and issued policy

Know what the information on a comparison screen actually proves.

General education · Current policy and eligibility rules should be verified with the official program or issuer.

Plan records are reference data

A plan record describes information from an ingested source. It might be incomplete, versioned or outdated. It does not establish that a plan is currently offered at your address.

Quotes require authorization and context

A valid quote is provider-specific and typically depends on the correct applicant, location, date and product rules. Not every plan comparison tool has a live carrier quoting connection.

  • Date and source of the data
  • Insurer and plan year
  • Jurisdiction and service area
  • Whether the response is a verified provider quote

Approval is still a separate event

An enrollment application must be submitted through an authorized channel, accepted or approved as applicable, and effective under the provider's rules. A saved draft, quote or payment attempt by itself does not guarantee insurance coverage.
